    • Code talking was pioneered in WW I by Cherokee and Choctaw tribal members. Messages transmitted by telephone. Beginning in 1940, the Army recruited Comanches, Choctaws, Hopis, Cherokees and others to transmit messages The Marine Corps recruited Navajo Code Talkers in ‘41 and ’42 WWI, WWII, Korean and Vietnam Wars, America’s enemies never deciphered any of the coded messages. Code talkers were from at least 16 tribes and served in the Army, Marines and Navy, including Assiniboine, Cherokee, Choctaw, Comanche, Meskwaki, Navajo, Lakota and Seminole
